Body rolling is a form of self myofascial release which employs various sized rubber balls to soften and release adhesions in your fascia. It utilizes the weight of your body for self massage and trigger point release and can be performed standing, seated or lying down.
Fascia is connective tissue that is a body wide system without beginning or end. There is fascia in just about every part of your body including your viscera, nervous tissue and most notably your musculoskeletal system.
Fascia is hydrophilic, meaning it has an affinity for water.
When we experience physical or emotional trauma, (acute or chronic) our bodies go into protection mode and this typically includes a limited or an absence of movement in the injured area. This altered mobility or rigidity can then spread to neighboring or seemingly unrelated regions of the body.
The trauma and secondary lack of mobility causes dehydration in your fascia, which then becomes viscous and adheres to its surroundings.
This congealing creates further immobility, dysfunction and pain.
Body rolling is designed to stimulate your fascial system by increasing blood flow, fluid exchange and muscle activation, all of which aide in returning your connective tissue to its healthy aqueous state.
Performing body rolling will augment your overall mobility, strength and proprioceptive awareness in your yoga practice and daily life.
